It\u2019s remarkable how far the Winter Olympics have come in the last 20 to 30 years. Skis are faster, sleds are more aerodynamic, skating techniques more advanced, and new events have joined the classics like downhill skiing, figure skating, Nordic skiing, and bobsled. The Olympics strike a perfect balance between tradition and innovation.<\/p>\n

That same spirit of innovation is transforming the way the Olympics are managed behind the scenes.<\/p>\n

Enter Cloud.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2014, the lead systems integrator for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that all core Olympic systems would be fully migrated to the cloud by the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang\u2014and they delivered on that promise.<\/p>\n

The 2018 Olympics and Paralympics became the first to run all mission-critical IT infrastructure remotely and entirely from the cloud. Every one of the 12 venues in PyeongChang was cloud-enabled. Cloud delivery meant game results could be transmitted to the media in just 0.3 seconds.<\/p>\n

This wasn\u2019t just a feat of speed\u2014it was a masterclass in cloud migration and cloud management.<\/p>\n

Rather than build new systems for each Olympic event, the IOC now leverages reusable cloud platforms. This reduces long-term costs for host nations and ensures more consistency in performance and security.<\/p>\n

While AWS<\/a> wasn\u2019t behind the infrastructure for these games\u2014Alibaba Cloud<\/a> was\u2014the takeaway remains powerful for any organization: full-scale managed cloud services are not only possible, they\u2019re often better.<\/p>\n

From a NetOps and managed services perspective, this shift is even more compelling. For the first time, systems testing and real-time IT management were handled remotely\u2014reducing both cost and the need for on-site resources.<\/p>\n
