{"id":2753,"date":"2018-02-24T18:49:49","date_gmt":"2018-02-24T18:49:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ptp.cloud\/ptp\/?p=2753"},"modified":"2025-06-23T23:39:22","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T03:39:22","slug":"cloud-cost-containment-strategies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ptp.cloud\/cloud-cost-containment-strategies\/","title":{"rendered":"Containing the Cost of the Cloud"},"content":{"rendered":"[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;2px|||||&#8221; da_disable_devices=&#8221;off|off|off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; da_is_popup=&#8221;off&#8221; da_exit_intent=&#8221;off&#8221; da_has_close=&#8221;on&#8221; da_alt_close=&#8221;off&#8221; da_dark_close=&#8221;off&#8221; da_not_modal=&#8221;on&#8221; da_is_singular=&#8221;off&#8221; da_with_loader=&#8221;off&#8221; da_has_shadow=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]\n<p data-start=\"498\" data-end=\"718\">We\u2019ve got clients in all stages of cloud adoption, from the nascent migrators to the \u201cwe\u2019re all ins.\u201d Each stage of the journey has its own challenges, and our job is to engineer solutions for each client, at each stage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"720\" data-end=\"946\">The final stage in the cloud journey (if there is such a thing!?) is the company that\u2019s all-in on the cloud and has invested significantly in AWS, Azure or Google (but for the purposes of this article, we are focusing on AWS).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"948\" data-end=\"1022\">Here are some common dilemmas that we hear continually from these clients:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1451\">\n<li data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1077\">\n<p data-start=\"1026\" data-end=\"1077\">I am spending a lot more money than I anticipated<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1078\" data-end=\"1188\">\n<p data-start=\"1080\" data-end=\"1188\">I \u2018guesstimated\u2019 RIs and I\u2019m not sure if I\u2019m even fully using the bandwidth\/space\/services I signed up for<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1189\" data-end=\"1292\">\n<p data-start=\"1191\" data-end=\"1292\">I don\u2019t have adequate visibility into my environment, from either the cost or security perspectives<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1293\" data-end=\"1370\">\n<p data-start=\"1295\" data-end=\"1370\">I don\u2019t have any historical context that I can use to plan for the future<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1371\" data-end=\"1451\">\n<p data-start=\"1373\" data-end=\"1451\">I get separate invoices for every cloud service I add, and it\u2019s unmanageable<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1453\" data-end=\"1591\">It\u2019s kind of like the old adage in advertising: \u201cHalf the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don\u2019t know which half.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1593\" data-end=\"1720\">So, we set out to find a solution, and did extensive due diligence with a number of viable tools, coupled with client feedback.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1722\" data-end=\"2116\">After \u201croad testing\u201d solutions in actual cloud environments, what we found is that companies are almost always spending more than they need to on cloud services, but they don\u2019t have appropriate visibility into their usage, and, consequently, their spend.
